Mike & Jessica, a Destination Wedding!

It's amazing to me that, of all the "jobs" I had growing up, and of all the jobs I could be doing today, someone out there was interested in traveling from Saint Louis to New York to get married, and chose me to come along just to photograph the blessed day. I truly must have the greatest job on earth. Please know that this isn't meant to come off as boastful, but rather it's my best attempt at being thankful and humble (I lack the literary skill to be a good writer, which is perhaps why I went into art).

Jessica & Mike were so incredibly considerate, and their families too, that I often felt like their guest. Nevertheless, I prefer to serve rather than being served, which is perhaps why I enjoy wedding photography so much. I could not contain my excitement regarding the opportunity to photograph their NYC wedding. My only regret is that we didn’t spend an entire day dedicated to photographing around the city. No ceremony or reception, just a day of shooting (I would have walked until my feet fell off if given the opportunity). Here's some images from the rehearsal, followed by dinner at Il Vagabondo.

On the wedding day, Jessica and the girls did morning hair appointments at Bloom Hair & Nail Spa.

Here’s Mike & Jessica’s first sighting at their hotel, Courtyard by Marriott on the Upper East Side.

The Occupy Wall Street group did cause us some concern, and there was a short amount of time, so plans to shoot at Brooklyn Bridge were abandoned in favor of locations that were closer and more significant to the bride and groom.

The nuptials took place at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Yorkville, followed by a dinner cruise aboard the Spirit of New York.

It’s still so surreal to me. I wish I could repeat their wedding at least a few times a year. So if you’re an engaged bride or groom, and thinking of traveling, bring me along :) Here’s what Jessica had to say after seeing the images.

“Thank you so so much for everything!!! I know it was a lot in two days and I hope that you'll be able to stand one more night with us- haha.

I just took a look at the gallery and they are so amazing!!!! I can't believe we have so many pictures to choose from- it's awesome!!! They look so good!!! There are so many really cool shots- you did such a good job.

We're so happy that you were our photographer- not only do the pictures rock but everyone kept saying how much they love you. Even when we were waiting for the plane, everyone kept saying how much they liked you and what a good job you did. All of my other friends hated their photographers (and some even their pictures) but I love everything!!!”

Jessica left me speechless with her testimony. With the prints, frames, albums or whatever they end up ordering, I hope to return the favor.

We're closing out the season with a bang. Four weddings to go, three of which are in October, one of which is in New York City! Can you tell I'm excited? Among my local weddings I'll be with Courtney & Josh at The Grand Opera House, then Neil joins me for Kate & Scott's wedding where we'll go to Forest Park and Heart of Saint Charles, and in early November I'll shoot the local reception for Jessica & Mike (NYC wedding) at Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. A little travel, a lot of awesomeness.

This past week I updated the family portraits of returning client-friends, Erica & Jeff, at Forest Park. The light and colors have been perfect for outdoor portraits.

Oh, and here's a couple of shots from the movie theater engagement session I promised two posts ago.

Courtney & Josh were great to humor me and cooperate with this concept. We also headed out to a park and got great images there. I'm VERY excited to be shooting their wedding soon.

The rest of today is packing and prep for NYC. If I'm worth my salt as a husband and father, I'll get the house picked up before my wife comes home and spend some time with my girls.

9/11 Remembering & Reflection

My story isn't special. I am not remarkable. People say it's vanity that causes our culture to blog and to update our Facebook status, as if everyone in our circle of influence should stop to read. On this matter, I call B.S. I think it can be theraputic, at least regarding 9/11, to share.

I was working in a barely-higher-than-secretarial position for Doubletree Hotel in Chesterfield, Missouri. On this particular day it was assigned to me to sort the mail pieces for the health club newsletter, and although I had been told about these planes crashing in New York, my mind was focused on my work and I really didn't give it as much attention as I should have. It was later in the morning when I passed one of the ballrooms, and saw that many of my co-workers were gathered around a television to watch the news. My oldest daughter, Maddie, was just over 2 months old at that time. What made the event more real to me was, obviously, the news footage, but also something that our hotel GM said to me. "Your little girl", he said, "is going to grow up in a different world". Time has proven him wise.

Later in the day I took a staircase to the administrative offices, as I often did, but realized on this day that hundreds, maybe thousands, were fleeing for their lives in a similar-looking staircase. It was finally at that time that the full gravity of the events had taken hold, and I paused to weep and ask God "why?".

George Orwell said, "People sleep peaceable in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf". While this is true, 9/11 has taught us that any government will have gaps in intelligence, no military can stop every threat, and that those gaps need to be filled by all of us. 9/11 was a wakeup call (I hope) that we all need to be alert, to question boldly things that apear suspect, regardless of how politically incorrect they may be, in the interest of pulic safety.

Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it. Teach your kids everything you can about this event. Correct your neighbors and family members when they tell you how Islam is a "peaceful religon". To learn from this is to honor those who died that fateful day, and the men and women who have since given their time, talents, and their very lives so that the rest of us can sleep peacably.

Last Saturday was my first-ever wedding that I could directly credit Facebook for. As Jessica will tell you, she happened upon my images from some unknown connection. It would seem fate, and Mark Zuckerberg, brought us together.

This is what we call an "establishing shot" outside Immaculate Conception of Dardene Prairie.

The bride and groom met while working at Bass Pro, so how could we not go there on their wedding day for some ass-kicking photos?

Then it was off to Main Street in Saint Charles for some general fun and relaxed images.

The remainder of the images are from Ameristar Casino in Saint Charles, Missouri, featuring the "Night Club". A dark, difficult venue to shoot, but it sure sets a mood and allows for very unique images.

This was literally at the end of the evening. Evidentally the wonderful ladies who worked the event with us went out for late night snacks afterward. As we posessing a Y chromosome, Neil and I were not invited. :(

The Value of Absence

I am currently re-making an album for a wonderful lady, who will remain anonymous. And knowing this person a little, I can truly say that she has a wonderful smile, except in her wedding photos. We didn't shoot this wedding, you see. I think her photographer must have been wearing a Hawian T-shirt and shouting "LOOK HERE! Say CHEESE!" before each shot because my sweet-natured bride looks about ready to kill, and it's SO not her nature.

I am most proud of being one of the first in our area to offer two-photographer coverage about 7 years ago. One thing we've always done differently is to be unobtrusive, especially with the 2nd (what we call "Documentary") photographer. I think that the unobtrusice nature, combined with generally being likeable and respectful, has a lot to do with your facial expressions on your wedding day.

This is a poor excuse for a blog entry. There are many clients from June that I need to brag on, but July has been a month of recovery, travel, and order fulfillment. Please be patient. It's been a busy and blessed summer.

I don't know why, but I know some of you will find it interesting that a group from my church just got back from a week in Cleveland, OH to help a small church with their VBS. This was my second year going, and the fifth our church sent a group. I don't know how much use I am to them, but if it matters to at least one person it was worth it. On the day we were supposed to head back home, we decided to show the kids (and us) Niagara Falls for the first time. That was 5 hours in the wrong direction, so the trip home was quite lengthy. I loved every minute.

This Week In Pictures

It's been too long since we've connected. That statement applies to everyone reading because I've been kind of a shut-in lately. I still employ multiple subcontractors, but for the most part, it's just me at Josephotography. Just know that we don't have to have business together for you to drop me a line to let me know what's new in your life. It might even make an interesting story here on the blog, if you're comfortable sharing that is.

What an amazing, diverse week it's been for me. Last Sunday (5/15) Neil and I were honored to serve as the official photographers for Matthew & Melissa's wedding. Our location shots at Tower Grove Park were in constant jeopordy because of the funky weather, but we managed to pull off some great shots. Both the ceremony and reception were at Hendri's, which had truly the most excellent tortellini I've ever had by the way.

Mike from Complete Music did a wonderful job as usual.

On Monday, I shot yet another session for my most loyal client-friends, the Hoffmanns. Their little Mollie is 1 year now. If you peruse the Engagement, Ankle Biters, Wedding and Maternity slide shows of my website, you'll see plenty of Hoffmann images. I hope that's an indication of how proud I am to be their family photographer.

Then on Tuesday I got to shoot an engagement session for Chris & Miranda on Main Street in Saint Charles. I've shot down there plenty of times, but can't ever remember having so much real estate all to myself. Who would have thought that the place would be pleasantly dead at 6:30 pm on a Tuesday?! Anyway, Miranda was very cooperative (okay, Chris also) and it was nice to be able to spend some time with them shooting my favorite kind of images.

Wednesday was an "edit" day for all those images.

And now, the finale'. I've been priviledged to have a job that I love. There are many perks, but every so often I get to be a part of something extra special. Perhaps more special than a wedding, but that's arguable. Yesterday I was honored to photograph a MARRIAGE PROPOSAL. The groom, Tom, called me about a week beforehand to introduce himself and tell me about his beloved Bailey. Together we came up with the location and setup. Who would have thought that a 30% change for rain would include the exact location and time for this clandestine event? So what did we do? PLAN B, which involved moving to Saint Peters Recreation Complex (we needed to stay near Saint Peters and continue with the groom's original plan of a picnic). The following images are from that moment when a man asked that most-important question, and his soul-mate said "yes".

I was truly honored to be present for this moment, and won't mess it up further by blathering on.

What the heck is a "Mom Prom"?!

Last week I was asked to shoot my first Mom Prom for Chaminade College Preparatory School. Basically it went like any other school dance, but with a couple of obvious exceptions.

Thankfully, no chaperones were needed.

Everyone seemed comfortable letting their guard down in front of our cameras.

Fun, fun, fun.

I have to say that Complete Music was REALLY on their game, because their DJ was perfect. She was the picture of what a professional DJ should be, and the best I've seen in a long while.

Special thanks to Neil for assisting me with the shoot, and we both appreciate the ability to serve as always.

I've just come out of a pretty cool week. Back in May of 2007 I had the honor to photograph John & Tiffany's wedding. Well they've just had twins, and I'm so glad they called me to create some newborn awesomeness. I count the family as true friends and some of the kindest people I'm priviledged to know. I was also able to shoot some Aerobics and Women's Tennis for Club at Chesterfield. I want to make sure the images that go on the internet are posted by them, so please refer to their Facebook page or website. I've got to run. Paul & Angie

It was March 12, 2011, a cooler day in Saint Louis, Missouri. Good thing our bride and groom, Angie and Paul, decided to get married in a greenhouse (specifically, The Jewel Box).

We started off at Medusa's for hair and makeup (makeup by Holly Yoder). This was my first trip to Medusa's. I found myself so confortable in their surroundings and was treated very well by the staff. The eclectic style was as warm and purposeful as the stylists, and I wished I had a reason to stay longer, but the uncaptured awesomeness of the day was waiting.

Then we headed over to The Jewel Box for some quick, outdoor portraits, and of course, the nuptials. The Jewel Box is a great place to shoot, no doubt. My only beef is the time restriction they impose. Since each client has to be in and out in 90 minutes, it can make even the most calm bride sweat (it could also be because they keep the temp around 80 degrees).

When in Forest Park, shoot awesomeness in Forest Park.

Our first choice for downtown scenery was Kiener Plaza, because it was an significant location for Angie and Paul. Unfortunately the Saint Patrick's Day festivities left an overwhelming and depressing amount of trash. No amount of Photoshop and time would be able to repair the damage, so we ventured onto the steps of... somewhere nearby. See if you can guess.

We had some fun making portraits around City Museum before adjourning for the reception. Russo's Catering did a wonderful job, hands down. If you can't tell, the fellowship, celebration and excitement of the evening spilled uncontrolably onto the dance floor.

All in all it was a terrific event, and I'm blessed to have been involved. Thanks for your time. I hope you were inspired.

A Visit to The Aries Company

Film and Digital - A Test, Trial, and Return

As I'm sure you know, because I remind you so often, I've been around a while. No, I don't feel old at almost 35. In fact, I know that some of you would smack me for suggesting it, with the "youth being wasted on the young" and all. But photography was a LOT different when I started. Actually, photography was only a little different, but the industry was like skipping through fields of sunflowers with narry a problem to be seen for miles. It's in that respect that things have changed.

Yes, the cameras are more like hand-held computers now than mechanical, optical, gear-driven, 10 lb, metal and glass, magical, soul-stealing machines. We took the chemistry out of the image making process and replaced it with chips, algorythms, and software. While digital is amzaing and opens new doors every year, I'm sad to know that I'll probably never smell another bath of Fixer. Not to mention, my kids have no clue what I'm talking about.

It's because I missed film so much, that I think it's time to go back. Definately not all the way, because this whole digital thing really is fun for being such a genie out of the bottle. But I want to get my film fix, cost : benefit ratio be damned. So what did I do? Yep! Went and got a used (of course - it's a film camera) Nikon F5. I had an F3 in highschool and hated the 20lb motor drive that attached, so this was my chance to get it right. And the F6, Nikon's last professional film camera, seemed too much like the F100. I wanted the beast that ran on (8) AA batteries with the vertical, kung-fu grip.

Some friends were kind enough to volunteer for my first film photographs in 8 years. At first it was difficult not to try to look at an LCD on the back door, but I soon remembered my Jedi training and let the Force flow. Below is a side by side comparison of a comparable film and digital image. Can you tell which is which?

No? Well what if we zoom in on those windows to the soul? Can you tell now? Have a look and let me know which you like better. Of course, this is a microscopic sample of what's available with post-process filters, film speeds, and varying kinds of film (print, slide, b&w, etc). Both images shot at ISO 400, F11 at 1/250.

I hope you've enjoyed this pointless trip down memory lane. Even if you haven't, I've had a great time, and it makes me happy to know I've still got "it".

Saint Louis Photographer's Showcase

After 14 years in business, I'm finally entering my first photography contest. Why? Because I learned a long time ago that being forced to think outside of your normal shooting style and subject matter is an excellent way to improve and challenge yourself.

This is my entry for the Saint Louis Photographer's Showcase this week under the category "Black and White". Results and images can be viewed each week by clicking here. I was asked to join at the last minute, and so my first week's submission was pretty poor. No worries, though. I am beating my head against the wall to see what new thinking I can produce, and win or lose, the contest will only improve me.

Woulda. Coulda. Shoulda.

It was recently brought to my attention that I neglected to post any sort of sneak peak from Julie & Ian's wedding last August. And while the images are some of our best, I truly owed them the publicity they deserved, and dropped the ball. In addition, I need to publicly thank them. Julie & Ian were so ahead of the game. They booked me a whopping 373 days in advance. Good thing, too, because for some strange reason we ended up shooting 5 weddings in a historically slow month.

Columbia, Missouri was important to Julie & Ian, as that's where they met. So where else would we do an engagement session other than Mizzou?

We started the day off at Julie's Mom's house to get all those behind-the-scenes images of her getting ready. Followed by the ceremony at Ascension Catholic Church.

Then it was off to the Sculpture Garden, and while that was cool, my favorite images came across the street when we took an "Inspiration Walk".

Finally, it was off to Palladium Saint Louis for a luminous, chic setting. Millenium Music kept the dance floor full and the guests happy. Here's the proof.

Anyway, I love these guys for being so patient and open-minded when it comes to the portrait process. I look forward to getting your album in your hands ASAP.

It's Obvious, isn't it?

It seems to be true that my favorite part of running my business is the photography. Least favorite? That's easy. Updating the blog! It's not that I dislike it per se'. I'd just rather be doing other things. That said, I need to get some items off the list:

I'm currently working on a new website for my weddings and commercial work. This will be a flash site (rather than html) and thus, much less cool than josephotography.com. Nevertheless, it's time I joined the world of 21st century photographers and got me a flash site.

Josephotography now has an upgraded listing on Wedding Wire. There's a link on the right column and you can go there to view/post reviews, examine the latest deals, etc. Today I've been adicted to updating my profile and connecting with other vendors. It's a very handy site. You can also find us on Martha Stewart Weddings now.

I've had a cold for about the past week. If you were expecting an album, album layout, or some other service before now I apologize. I should be caught up in a couple of days. This particular cold left me needing about 12 hours of sleep a day, which was extremely wierd for me.

Finally, there have been some changes to the site, reflective of some soul searching. You may notice a significant price increase on the wedding side. I'm very excited about the new packages because I'm finally free to give rediculous amounts of time and attention to each client (going forward). Of course, all contracts for the previous price structure will be honored.

That's about it for now. Here's some recent images I've been bad boy for not posting in a timely manner...

Fall Awesomeness to Hurt You So Good?

A week ago Saturday I had the pleasure of shooting the nuptials for Kristin & Craig. Their ceremony was held at Saint John's United Church of Christ, followed by some shots at one of my favorite restuarants (and the location of their first date), Premiere Catering & 2nd Street Cafe. Here's a photo of Kristin & Craig, with co-owner, Jim Thomas.

There's so much to love about Premiere. If you're looking for a quaint date night in historic Saint Charles, you can't do any better. The food is terrific and co-owner, Jim Thomas makes you feel as though he's attending to your every need (there's a great article about the restaurant in the September issue of Cooking For Profit Magazine). Jim takes pleasure in reminding me that their un-official motto is "Hurt You So Good". I've attached a menu to wet your appetite.

We headed off to Forest Park just around sunset, which was just enough time to get some crucial romantic shots. I love the Golden Hour lighting, with it's warm brown foliage, the few remaining hints of fall, and the deep blue skies that no longer show signs of the haze we see all summer. The reception at Norwood Hills was the perfect way to end the day. Norwood does a great job of keeping guests happy. The ambiance and staff are flawless and, in my book pretty much define what a higher end reception should look like.

Also of note was the performance by Trilogy. Their music was great and they seemed to take fewer breaks than other bands.

All in all, the day was amazing. Kristin & Craig couldn't have been easier to serve and I look forward to helping them with the coming album and prints. Congratulations you guys!

Kacie & Lance

As I mentioned, I went down to Cape Girardeau (no, I did not continue the 30 minutes to Sikeston to eat at Lamberts) to shoot the engagement session for Kacie & Lance. It was definitely not my typical engagement session (not that I have one). I truly enjoy shooting in new locations for several reasons. Won't bore you with details, so here's the shots.

The Awesomeness Time of Year

Last Saturday, 10/2, I got to do a couple of engagement sessions. Sometimes it feels like I shoot more engagements than weddings, but it's only because of the wonderful Fall climate Saint Louis gets to enjoy.

The whole day was cold and windy, and it even rained in the morning, but that didn't stop us. First I met up with Laura & Phil at the neighborhood playground where Phil proposed using a system of Post-its (it's a lot more romantic when they tell it). As you'll see, we moved on to a park for some more traditional images.

Later in the day I met up with Sally & David at the park where he proposed, Corondelet Park. David shares my passion for quality boots (by the way, I exchanged the Redwings that were killing my ankles for a cooler pair of Redwings).

Tomorrow I'm scheduled to shoot the engagement session for Kacie and Lance in Cape Girardeau. I'm looking forward to being challenged by a new location, and the introspection a long car ride can bring.

What a busy Saturday!!

Clients are always interested in non-workday hours for their consultations and photo sessoins. What's different about Josephotography, LLC is that this is my full-time job, so weekdays are no problem. That said, I still find a much greater need for weeknights and Saturdays, and do my best to accommodate a family life and all the clients.

Back on September 25th, I was able to shoot an engagement session for Bernie and Aaron in the morning...

Melissa & Matt met at Steak n Shake. I have the pleasure of shooting their wedding next year, and as usual, insisted that we use a location that had special meaning to them. So where do you think our first location was?

My only regret is that I didn't get an order of onion rings to go. In every other respect it was a truly enjoyable session and I look forward to the "dorkiness" of the wedding day (her word, not mine).

Since this is a business blog, if there is such a thing, and not a personal one, I generally try to avoid topics of a personal nature. Especially when it comes to the two taboos of business, politics and religion. I'll be venting about the former for just a few minutes this morning.

A couple of months ago, we had a primary election here in Missouri. There were several issues on the ballot, as well as the decision of who would face off in the general election for Missouri Senator. One of the biggest complaints about our electorate that I heard in 2008 was that we hadn't chosen the two best candidates from either party to face off. Arguably we could have done better than McCain or Obama, but instead, chose as we always did. Career politicians who play the game of politics because they serve their agenda, their special interest groups, their lobbyists, and anything but what their constituents (their bosses) tell them. You would think after seeing what Obama has done to this country, and knowing that McCain probably would not have been any better, that we would have learned our lesson.

So in this primary election I was writing about, there were 9 individuals running on the Republican ticket. Oh, before I go further, my first choice was to vote independent, but that ballot had no option to vote for any candidate. So I selected a Republican ballot and cast my vote for a political novice. Someone who hadn't taken any money from lobbyists or PACs. What did Missourians do? We chose one career politician, Blunt, to run against another career politician, Carnahan. We put a name against a name. Guess what, Missouri. These people are the same person. They would both put you last on the list of priorities. From what I know about these candidates, the things each of them say about the other on television are true.

I don't know who will win this race, but I can tell you who lost; Missouri. We will have 6 years with the victor to find out if I'm right. The rest of our great and diverse country seems to be going through an awakening. Why is Missouri still asleep?

Just an update to give appropriate props. Shot some awesomeness for Alicia & Jeremy at Hermann Hill Weddings in Hermann, MO. All I can say is "Wow". What a venue.

Also did a senior session for Lacy in a downtown alley at dusk. I'm always happy with the quality of the light among the buildings at sunset.

I was recently called out about how I hadn't updated the blog lately. I don't mind at all. In fact, I appreciate it whenever I'm reminded of how I can maintain my own standard of excellence. Enough procrastination! Here's the doozy of an update!

I was proud to photograph former bride and groom, John and Ann and their new baby boy, Luke. All brides and grooms who use Josephotography for their wedding photography have the option to come in annually for a free portrait session. I also recently got to mix it up with a headshot for local Oral Surgeon, Dr. Stephen Clary. Dr. Clary served in the military for 20 years and has recently taken up private practice here in Chesterfield. He's a very cooperative and easy subject, and I imagine if I needed such services, a great doctor.

Then in late June (it's all a blur at this point) I shot the engagement session for Louise & Kevin. They're getting married on 8/6, which is almost my wedding anniversary. We did a dusk session during what we photographers call "golden hour". Here's a couple shots from the session.

Many of you will have had my associate, Jason Bentrup, help me photograph your wedding. Jason has been with me for over 3 years and has been a greater asset than I know how to express. Our relationship began when our studio shot his wedding to his lovely wife, Roxanne. Anyway, Jason & Roxanne are moving out of the country in just a couple weeks, and I HAD to give them a family portrait before they left.

Finally, right before I went out of town, I did the annual family portrait for my brother-in-law, David. Dave's a great guy with perhaps the most genuine smile I've ever seen.

And now the "big reveal". This post is dedicated to Angie & Paul, who properly called me out for not keeping the blog current. There's still much more to share, but it will just have to wait. Be sure to check our Facebook page, which tends to be more current.

June Weddings

It's June, as you no doubt have heard. The studio is buzzing with activity and I'm already anxious for the August slow down (though this August isn't going to be slow either - thank God). So far this month we've shot a couple weddings and have one remaining, which is tomorrow. Yesterday I was fortunate enough to get in a head shot for a new oral surgeon at the studio. Later today I have an engagement session on Main Street in Saint Charles, and I only hope the rain holds off. Here are just a couple of images from the weddings. I'm in the studio tonight feeling overwhelmed for the first time in a while about the number of sessions there are to be edited and presented to the clientele. 2008 and 2009 were difficult years for Josephotography, LLC. But I'm thankful because they were the first of their kind since we opened our doors in 1997, and without them, I would never truly understand how important preparedness is. I now look forward to the next 25 or 30 years knowing that each experience makes me more savvy, and a stronger business owner. All that said, here's some images from those sessions...

First, congratulations to Ann & Harry!

And then (these are not in chronilogical order) I got to shoot a great engagement session for Kristin & Craig on Main Street in Saint Charles last Saturday (before all the rain).

And before all that stuff happened, I shot Chris, Beth and Claire at the Rec Plex a while back. Also shot a wonderful session with the Nash family, but you'll have to check our Facebook page for those...

And then recently, I think a week ago or so, I had the pleasure of shooting a gift for Christine from her kids, John & Elizabeth.

So much going on right now, and yet, I can't get enough. It may be time to bring Leslie back to the studio. For those who haven't had the pleasure, Leslie is a great person, who's wedding I was honored to photograph, and then she came to work for me at the studio... She's a nurse now so I may have to get someone else. Anyway, I'm rambling. Hope the photos please everyone and preserve family memories for generations.

Just Plain Update

Got to shoot sweet, little Cara and her mom last week. A 90 minute session was definitely a good idea for this bundle of engergy. Had them out today to go over images and make selections.

Then I swung by Club At Chesterfield the other day to pick up the publications my photos were used for. See the ad in the current issues of Out & About Magazine and West Newsmagazine. The shoot was fun, despite the last-minute scheduling and instant turnaround. I hope to do it again soon as I thrive on the creative juices required to shoot anything "different".

What is Your "Paris"?

My wife and I were married in 1998. At that time, she was 19 and I was 22. We were working students, poor and in love. Lauri had taken 5 years of French by then, and had always wanted to visit Paris. As a young man in love, it didn’t matter that we hardly had two nickels to rub together. Somehow we would have her honeymoon in Paris.

For 9 months we spent money only where we had to, with one indulgence; cigarettes (we quit when she got pregnant with our first child, btw). We didn’t eat out, rent movies, buy new clothes that weren’t absolutely necessary, etc. We just played video games and smoked cigarettes, and of course, went to class and worked our butts off.

Paris was a 9 hour flight in coach. Our stay was in an old (and I mean really old) hotel with no air conditioning – IN AUGUST. We were able to get around whenever we needed, including walking to Eiffel. We budgeted just right and came back home with almost no money, but didn’t want for much while we were there.

Today, so many brides tell me that our professional services are out of their budget. But I think the question you have to ask yourself is, what is my “Paris”? What is worth giving up some comforts for a few months so that I can have a lifetime of beautiful memories? Our photography is an investment. It’s value grows over time. The only photograph that has hung in my home for almost 13 years consecutively is a 16x20 of my wife and I on our wedding day. And at the time it was taken, I didn’t worry about whether my photographer knew what he was doing, or whether my negatives were going to get incorrectly exposed or lost. I only thought about the life I was starting with my soul mate, and now I have the beautiful prints to cherish forever.

Price Shopping and the News

Have you ever heard of Absolute Photography? Chances are good that you have, but not for good reasons. Recently a local news channel, KSDK (Saint Louis), reported about the continual abuse of client trust and complaints with the Better Business Bureau. I won't go into extreme detail, but my point isn't about what Absolute Photography has done but rather the WHY. From what I've read, the owners seem to have some lack of professionalism. However, their failure could be because of their pricing structure. A visit to the website reveals that their packages start at $475. Unless you make your money on the back end and have a proven business plan like Sears Portrait Studio or Trotter Photography, one can not stay in business at less-than-realistic pricing. Sadly, most established, full-time photographers typically try to educate their clientele about why our pricing is higher than the weekend warriors, upstarts, and hobbyists. It's not that we're egotistical pre-Madonnas. We have learned over time what it takes to maintain a healthy business.

While having some deep introspection on this issue, I have realized something about myself. I'd rather work for free than accept money, period. Please don't call the police. I'm not intoxicated. It's just that money gets in the way. Budgets are a necessity for most of us, but they often keep me from doing some of the amazing things I WANT to do for my clients (like go to their destination wedding, provide albums for their sweet grandmothers, or rent out an entire bowling alley for a combination photo shoot/party). However, since I pay for things like a studio, insurance, professional equipment, advertising, workshops and continuing education, I must charge a fee (not to mention, I need a salary just like you).

If you take anything away from this articile, I hope it's that price matters, but only as much as the quality of your wedding photographs matter for the rest of your life. In other words, will it matter 20 years from now what you spent on your wedding photography? If asked, I bet that the clients of Absolute Photography would respond with a resounding, "NO".

I love kids. Always have. Their silliness is too often restrained by the families who come in for portraits, so I'd like to try something different this year. Bunch - O - Photo Sessions!

Barely time to edit and retouch all the sessions I've shot this week. How about we start with the wedding ceremony of Megan & Matt on 9/12? Special thanks to Neil for his help with this amazing experience (you're awesome, dude).

Then the Kastner Family came out to the studio for some portraits. I think the planets must have aligned because we had around 15 minutes where everyone was happy and cooperative. The rest we address with Photoshop.

Last Saturday I did a double-header. An engagement session for Jamie & Joe early in the morning, followed by an engagement session for Angie & Derek... early in the morning. All I can say is the light is good when the light is good, regardless of what time we get out of bed.

I was privileged to shoot a group portrait for the 603rd AC & W Reunion at the Gateway Arch. The group needed quick turnaround so that they could leave town with prints in hand, and I was happy to serve.

This weekend I look forward to Brie and Jeremy's wedding, but first I'll be helping out with a garage sale at my house. Hope you found something interesting in this post.

New Stuff

This week is insane. In addition to getting multiple albums out the door and finalizing some new advertising, I'm shooting a wedding on Saturday for Megan & Matt. They're a great couple who booked me a year ago tomorrow, so I've had a long time to work with them, photograph them and get to know what makes them smile. I know they must feel like they can't believe their big day is almost here, but this time I can't believe it either.

I had the pleasure to travel to Columbia, Missouri to photograph the engagement session for Julie & Ian recently. Why Columbia? Because that's where they met (Mizzou). Anyway, it was a great session simply because they were very sweet to each other and obviously happy.

And then a few days ago I got to shoot a partial modeling portfolio with Meagan (a different Meagan - note the spelling). Modeling sessions are always interesting because they challenge you creatively to produce an attention-getting, powerful image. In time I'll have more samples.

So that's all for now. I'm processing another engagement session and a family session and will have those images up soon.

I'm working from home today and find myself needing to take care of some housekeeping announcements, but without the studio archive. Therefore, I apologize to the multiple families and brides that I am temporarily neglecting by not posting your images here. What I do have are images from my portable hard drive of my friend, Jonalee. In an effort to do something nice for her husband, Jonalee came by the other day with multiple wardrobe options and a cooperative spirit. With the help of hair designer, Josh Nichols, the shoot was a resounding success. Special thanks to my wife, Lauri, for watching Jonalee's kids a couple hours (sorry but we don't normally provide daycare for my clients). These are the results from the shoot.

Sarah & Mike's Nuptials - More Like Friends Than Clients

It seems like I say this after every wedding, but I guess I truly do enjoy my job and my clients. Sarah & Mike were a genuine pleasure to photograph last Saturday. We were blessed with clear, although really hot, weather. My only regret, despite spending 14.5 hours shooting that day, is that we didn't have enough time to get everything we wanted. Last Wednesday I had the priviledge of shooting the engagement session for Amy & Scott. In addition to the Missouri riverfront we went to Fritz's Frozen Custard in Florissant. I always prefer to go to locations that have sentimental value to the client.

Then on Saturday Neil and I shot the wedding of Laura & Phil at Mt. Pleasant Winery in Augusta. It was a beautiful day and the most gusty wind I've ever shot in for certain. Congratulations you guys!

This Saturday I'm shooting Sara & Ryan's wedding with Jason in Eureka. I'm so happy to be shooting in the most beautiful locations! I hope everyone reading this loves their job as much as I do and feels blessed on such a damp, dismal Monday.

Saint Patrick / Update

Today is St. Patrick's Day. I put on a green shirt this morning without remembering what day it was, and then felt like taking it off because it just seemed... hokey.

The move into the studio is complete! I finally had my phone and internet installed today! The Home and Contact pages of the website have been updated accordingly. Yesterday I shot Amy & Scott's engagement session, followed by a National Junior Honor Society induction. I love that my day always holds variety.

Last Week's Wedding Show

Today is Saturday and it's been almost a week since we did the show at Orlando Gardens. I had a feeling before leaving that day that the show went well, and I was right! I truly enjoyed meeting the brides, grooms, mothers, sisters and friends from our area and getting to help inform them why we're a smart decision among photographers.

Within the first 15 minutes of the show I met with Leah and Tim, who graciously brought me some drippy, gooey chocolate from a neighboring booth. Like barbecue ribs, this is a treat best enjoyed in the privacy of my home. Yet, because I commented on how pleasant the aroma was, they were thoughtful enough to take care of me. THANKS, guys.

Later I spoke with Amanda about her wedding to Brian and really enjoyed getting to know more about her and her plans for the big day. There were so many more brides (and a few grooms) that gave me some of their time and shared their love of photography with me. I am extremely grateful.

And then there were the other vendors. I particularly enjoy meeting new people and revisiting with familiar faces. I made the embarrassing mistake of confusing an emery board for a tongue depressor (until I touched it). C'mon, they do look similar. I had a nice chat with Laurie from The Christy, a great reception spot where they understand the meaning of "Value" (like me).

No photos for this post so I suppose I'll wrap up. Next month I'm shooting a personal project that will allow me some badly needed expression.

And then in April I'm teaching 2 courses on photography at Renaud Spirit Center in O'Fallon, Missouri. The classes are for enthusiastic beginners who want to take better photographs, learn a little about the science and history of photography, and have a LOT of fun. One class is for kids, the other for adults. I'll post registration information as soon as it's available.

Blessings to all of you in the coming year from Josephotography! Special thanks to Breanne and Kalei for asking me to photograph them recently.

As a business that's been around since 1997, we've seen the economy rise and fall, and fall, and fall. Seriously, though, this has presented opportunity to seek other avenues for growth. Look for minor changes to our website soon with more information or samples for portraiture and commercial photography.

One last note. Brides and Grooms of Josephotography enjoy a security that we seldom mention. Over the course of an engagement, many things happen. Sometimes this means job loss, the health needs of a loved one, etc. Whenever clients of ours are unable to make payments on their wedding package, we still show up and shoot the best possible images at the wedding. No mention of money is made and no money is ever accepted at a wedding (it's a day for celebration -not business). The money part can be figured out without missing all the magical moments that can't be repeated.

Merry Christmas!

My sister sent me the following in an email. Feel free to contact me if any of it rings true for you....

HOLIDAY EATING TIPS

1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It's rare.. You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple,Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? LaborDay?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.

Remember this motto to live by:"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!" Have a great holiday season.

At this point, the biggest way I can impact tomorrow’s election is to vote. However, I would be very frustrated with myself on Wednesday morning if I did not say the following (and if Obama wins).

For our security, our economy, our education, our unborn children, and our country as a whole, Vote McCain!

And people, please. It’s not that I love McCain or agree with him more than 50% of the time. But it’s time to choose the lesser of 2 evils, the known quantity, the patriot…

That’s all I can say.

The Newest Engagement Session

I always appreciate it when a client allows me to make suggestions regarding wardrobe, location, time of day, season, etc. Megan & Matt allowed me to pick the Saint Louis Zoo as part of their engagement session. I've shot some weddings or wedding-day portraits there, but never an engagement session, so this was exciting. Also on my list of dream locations, the museum beneath the Gateway Arch (I just think it's a neat space) and the interior of the St. Louis Art Museum.

This Saturday will be Christy & Chris' wedding. If you're experiencing deja vu, there's good reason. This is the 2nd Christy & Chris I'll be photographing this year.

Wednesday I shot a HS senior session with Alison, who is the sister of a former groom. I'm always flattered when our clients or their family members come back for new portraits. On this occassion, however, it rained -a lot. So never being the one to say "quit", we made lemonade (from lemons), and shot some awesome portraits in the rain.

Over the Weekend...

Over the weekend I got to take my kids to the pumpkin patch. I'm amazed at how Halloween gets bigger every year and, consequently, is starting to resemble Christmas. I'm seeing more Halloween lights on neighborhood homes. Before we know it we'll be telling Freddy or Jason what candy we want for Halloween (although probably not sitting on their laps) and going door to door on Christmas (I'm not sure why, but just watch).

Wow. That got away from me before I could stop it. Here's a couple of shots from Sarah & Mike's engagement session last Friday.

The Stock Market

Yesterday was a bad day on Wall Street, to say the least. Despite the economic state and concern, I think it makes a lot of sense to continue to live much as we have been. After all, our dollars are backed by faith in government, not gold. We will not be cutting any corners at Josephotography that would affect a client's experience. To make buying decisions a little easier, we're discounting enlargement sales on our website. Until things stabilize, save 30% on orders $250 or more. This means that an order for enlargements of $250 will only cost $175 (plus shipping)!

Why Have We Moved?

Much has changed in the world in the almost 4 months since my last post. As you probably know, we moved from our O’Fallon studio to a larger, more central space in Saint Charles last March. This space was awesome and a lot of time, work and money went into making it the studio I’ve always wanted. If you were able to see it either with a consultation, portrait session or social visit I am appreciative and honored.

Shortly after moving in it became clear that there was a mold problem. When asked to resolve this, the building’s owner was unwilling to take necessary steps to make the studio mold-free. Consequently some damage had occurred to our furnishings and equipment and we had to move out near the end of last August (by the way, a HUGE thanks to all who helped).

As you can see, the Saint Charles studio was beautiful and moving out has been a challenge. Leslie (my assistant) and I currently work from my home and will likely continue in this way until issues with the previous landlord are resolved. That being said, we still offer all of our services and are even providing free shipping on all albums and frames.

I hope you continue to patronize our humble boutique, to tell your friends about your experiences with us, and to trust that a company founded in 1997 has not gotten this far by running away from “challenges”.

Last month I had the privilege of photographing the new, world-headquarters for Maverick Technologies in Columbia, Illinois. The photographs have been used for a great website allowing viewers to take a virtual tour. I was so excited to work on this project! Last year I photographed the ground-breaking ceremony, and to see the building erected and in use so quickly was truly impressive. Check it out by clicking HERE.

Ok. Once again, it's been too long since I've blogged. We've moved into the new studio in Saint Charles and there's much settling in still to be done.

Warm weather is coming, and with it, outdoor sessions. Our new studio lends itself to urban chic, historic and French influences all within walking distance. Photos of the new studio and surrounding areas will be in the next blog, I promise.

Congratulations to Jen & Robbie who were married last Saturday, April 12. This is a huge tease because their entire wedding won't go online until tomorrow afternoon.

It's Snow Joke

Ok. I couldn't resist the play on words. Here's a picture of how the Radican's make a "Snow Dad". My oldest, Maddie, was a big helper. SINCE SO MANY HAVE ASKED...

The camera was only on the snowman for 2 minutes, and had a white paper towel behind it for protection. The camera has been used since and works great.

As a business note, all gallery-wrap canvas size 16x20 and larger are 20% off all month! These are valid as pre-orders for our coming weddings, or for any client we've shot within recent years! For more information, contact the studio.

Our studio is moving sometime next month (The new studio is currently being made over)! Look for more updates here in coming weeks.

Wedding Show Update!

Wow! What a day Saturday was. I meant to take some photos of our booth at The Wedding Show to put up here, but we were swamped (and I didn't bring my camera).

We had actual brides from weddings we photographed in 2007 available to answer questions from inquisitive brides and mothers. Kudos to the grooms that were brave and patient and able to assist.

Special-huge thanks to Scott, Jason, Julia and Lauren. Thanks also to Sara of 5/31/08. Your fast response and kind words were much appreciated.

This month we'll be booking up the 2008 wedding schedule, resuming the Photography Club at WCA, and shooting Tony & Elizabeth's wedding. Blessings to all of you in the new year!

The Wedding Show!

I can't contain my anticipation for this upcoming weekend. I'm talking, of course, about The Wedding Show at America's Center. There are other wedding vendor fairs that happen throughout the year, and even another one this weekend (Sunday), but we only take part in this one show all year, and only on Sturday.

Be sure to come out on the 5th. We'll have some awesome new samples, staff on hand to answer questions, and something special... To the best of my knowledge, we're the only ones at the show who will have actual clients on hand to answer questions from inquisitive brides and grooms! They'll be able to tell anyone who wants to know exactly what it was like to have a wedding photographed by Josephotography! Can you tell I'm busting at the seams over this?

Some tips for a successful Wedding Show:
Wear comfortable shoes
Dress for 60 degree weather, despite being indoors.
Bring a small bag for literature and giveaways.
Come by the Josephotography booth!

I recently had the privilege of shooting the cover for Saint Louis Bride and Groom Magazine's Winter / Spring issue. This was my first cover for them. Special thanks to Scott and Neil for assisting with the shoot, B&G for the opportunity, Caroline Vineyard, West Model and Talent, and all the Josephotography brides and grooms that brought us this far.

WHERE TO FIND US:
This Saturday, Dec 1, from 12-4 we'll be at Westgate Christian Academy's Vendor Fair. I'll be giving away a free 8x10 print for any session booked that day and a portion of the sales will be donated to the school.

January 5th we'll be at America's Center for The Wedding Show. The show actually goes through Sunday but, as most of you know, we don't work on Sunday. If you're a bride or groom coming to the show I hope you'll find time to come out on Saturday so that I can personally meet you.

Yesterday I got to take the WCA photo- graphy club to the Art Museum. I'm amazed at how many youth and adults alike have never been to our world-class museum. Admission is free! The only way they could make it easier is to send a shuttle to your home. C'mon!
